  • WindRestrictor - Vet's & Corvettes

This week the WindRestrictor family had the honor to work with a very special Vietnam Veteran Sgt. James McDermott on a custom project for his C6 Corvette.

The time is always right to remember these folks for their unwavering sacrifice and service to our beautiful country, but what better time to be able to do this than Memorial Day to remember the fallen and get to know the survivors?James McDermott WR Wall PicMcDermott Purple Heart Plate

We were honored to meet Sgt. McDermott and to all have a part in working with him to listen to some of his memories of service and be able to help him tell his story in this beautiful custom art that he can always have with him. Our hope is that this brings a smile to his face every time he looks in the rear view mirror and that it affords him many opportunities to share his story as he goes to Car Shows where it's sure to be noticed.

Here are some of the highlights from our visit with Sgt. McDermott while he was having his WindRestrictor installed at our office in Dallas.

(WR) Does your car have a name and/or a story behind it?

Not yet, but I’m kinda thinking about something like “Silver Bullet” but there is already one of those locally. I will come up with something though.

(WR) What’s under your hood and want to tell us about some of your
    favorite mods?

No Mods yet except for the WindRestrictor but some are coming. The car is a C6 2008 convertible and (thankfully) has the LS3 engine, which was an upgrade for the 08 model and has 430 HP . As my first performance mod, I’ll be doing the air intake system at the front.

Here's a video we put together with a favorite song from the Vietnam Era. "Leaving on a Jet Plane".

(WR) You chose to go with a “Custom” design, can you tell us about your
design selections and what each means to you?

The design is “one of a kind” which I put together on the fly and with a lot of help from Stephen. It all has to do with my Vietnam experience. My unit had three unique weapons. The Duster was a Twin 40mm Bofors Cannon . Navy "Pom Pom" guns in an open turret on a tank (a modified M41 and designated the M42A1). The quads were a mount with 4 .50 cal M2 machine guns. The mount could turn 360 degrees and elevate to about 90 degrees. The gunner sat inside the mount. The mount could be towed, but was mostly mounted on a deuce and a half (2.5 ton) or later 5 ton trucks. Firing the guns was shaking the deuce apart. The mounts were also placed on mountains and hills and used in a semi-permanent ground role.

Another interesting fact is that a lot of ammo was needed to feed those four .50 cal machine guns, so the bed of the truck was filled completely with .50 cal ammo cans.

The searchlights were Xenon lights mounted on jeeps. The jeeps were M151A1 type (new ones) with a 100 amp electrical system. The lights had about 1.5 million candle power and were switchable between white light and infrared light. We had special binoculars for the infrared, which was used mostly to find targets (VC, NVA). Once located, and when backup weapons were ready (artillery, mortars, cobra gun ships, etc.) we switched to white light and lit up the night. I enjoyed my time ( 9 months) on the searchlights very much.

I was the trouble shooter for the unit and went wherever there was a problem so i got to travel extensively and i always had transportation, no walking was required.

(WR) Tell us about your experience working with the Graphic Artist? Any
room for improvement in that process?

My time spent with Stephen was just great! We went through at least 6 versions before finalizing it. I asked Stephen to do a few things which I thought were impossible, but he always came through with flying colors.

(WR) What was your overall purchasing experience like with
WindRestrictor and how can we improve that experience?

I can’t think of when I’ve have ever had a nicer time buying something. Everyone was courteous, professional and accommodating and I know they went “above and beyond” in their treatment of me. I really don’t know of anything I would change.

James McDermott - Veteran - working design up with Pam 0517Steve and Mr. McDermott

(WR) Have you taken home any trophies at shows , tell us about them?

The car is still pretty new to me. I bought it last August. I did go to a show called the “First on the 1st” on January 1st and I got a trophy (for me, not the car). It was for my first Corvette show.

People were impressed with the graphics also. And for the category of cars 1970 and newer, I got the "Outstanding" trophy. And there were several new Corvettes there as well as a few other newer than '70 cars.”

    James McDermott - Veteran - Bonham Show 052017 2

“When I left you yesterday, the top was up, but I put it down at the first light, and drove all the way home. This is a testimonial that your product works better than advertised. Cruising at 75 mph, I didn't have to worry about my hat blowing off, or my beard blowing up in my face, or stuff on the passenger seat blowing out of the car. It was great. And I drove home from Bonham after the car show with the top down. I'm really loving it.

    James McDermott w WR

(WR) Thank you again for your selfless service to our country, for your valued business and we wish you many miles of safe Top Down Driving!

  • Tweety B, The Corvette Racing Tribute Car by Kenneth Berg

    TWEETY B, Owner Kenneth Berg
TWEETY B Yellow Corvette Convertible at National Corvette Museum 22nd Anniversart TWEETY B at National Corvette Museum 22nd Anniversart

"Most of my Corvettes have been convertibles... Although I loved the lines of my 2015 coupe, this is a car that truly looks like it's going a hundred miles per hour standing still! With my coupe, I missed the ease and convenience of a convertible! With the ability to lower the top up to 30 mph and very quickly, I can now do it whenever the feeling hits me!

Sometime during  the first couple of months of ownership, I decided to turn TWEETY B into a tribute to Corvette Racing, specifically, the #3 Car driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia. You see, when I took my 2015 Coupe to COTA (the Circuit of the Americas) for the IMSA TUDOR Race, my car was selected by Jan Magnussen as his favorite! So naturally when I bought my convertible, it should be a tribute to him and the #3!"

    Do You Attend Any Shows?

"I attend a lot of shows - open shows and Corvette Only shows!!  I love hanging out with fellow Corvette folks because they always exhibit new ideas for future mods and improvements!

I am a member of the  largest Corvette club in Texas for sure - Lone Star Corvette Club - with over 1,000 members. A great way to meet folks, find folks with similar Vette interests whether it be drag racing, cruising, autocrossing, long trips, etc.  We have the BEST car show every year in May at the Texas Motor Speedway with proceeds going to our designated charities. One other thing I would like to mention to Corvette owners (probably for any car make or model), Facebook groups are a great way to get information about your car, diagnosing problems, solving issues.  The folks following those pages have seen it all! Some of the biggest and best include Bad Boy Vettes, Outlaw Vettes, Xcelerate Vettes, Mojo Vettes, Simply Corvettes - just to name a few! When there are thousands of followers, SOMEONE has certainly experienced (and probably solved) your issue! Check out the Facebook groups."

    IMG_1891

Has Tweety B won any awards or trophies?

"I have won a number of trophies. A couple that were special include the one I mentioned from Jan Magnussen and then last year, Wil Cooksey, former Plant Manager at Bowling Green, selected my car as his favorite at the 22nd Anniversary of the Museum "Truly Race Inspired" was his comment."

Are you a customer of ours? If so how was your experience and what did you purchase?

"I sure am!   I would parrot most of your Customer Support, I suspect.  Great folks to work with. I am fortunate enough to live relatively close to WindResrictor so I visited, saw all you had to offer and met the nicest folks."

Ashley & Luna the Mini Cooper Roadster

Photos by B. Jones Photography Photos by B. Jones Photography

"My name is Ashley and Luna is my 2014 MINI Cooper S Roadster. She is named after her moon-like silver color. Our household of 3 MINIs holds to a spacey theme (Luna, Stella, Aura). After the release of the Roadster model in 2012, I immediately fell in love with them. As I couldn't part with my other MINI I decided to wait until I could afford both! 3 years later Luna came into my life. In the 1 year and 3 months of ownership Luna and I have driven across the country on a massive MINI trip with a thousand other MINIs, attended countless local club trips, took engagement photos with my fiancé and installed a tuning chip, sway bar, exhaust upgrade, cold air intake, and most importantly...a custom wind restrictor!

    Ashley 2

I found out about Wind Restrictor through pictures online. Within a week of having my new car I was ordering a wind restrictor and could not believe how easy the buying process was. The next day after ordering I was in touch with Stephen for my custom design. I told him I liked their union jack design to match the car (Luna came with union jack accents) and asked if we could add "Luna" across the front. Stephen turned around 3 different fonts and one of them captured exactly what I envisioned! I made my selection and a very short time later, my wind restrictor arrived. My fiancé installed it and Luna became one of the most unique cars around!

I get many compliments on the wind screen, especially during our huge MINI roadtrip last Ashley 4summer. Most of the time people have never seen such a thing and comment how amazing it looks. I proudly tell them to check out Wind Restrictor if they have a convertible of their own. 2 friends and my mom have followed suite and ordered their own custom designs and love them just as much as I love Luna's.

Just when I thought MINIs couldn't be customized any more than they are, Wind Restrictor proved me wrong. Topless driving is such a blast showing off Luna's bling - especially at night! The team has been the warmest, nicest group of people to work with from design to installation questions and I am excited to be part of such an exclusive group of friends! It is so cool that convertible owners from all makes of cars share a common passion."

  • Customer Spotlight: Daniel Gouker & ROXY the Cadillac XLR Convertible

    The Story of Roxy

2005 CADILLAC XLR ROADSTER RETRACTABLE HARDTOP CONVERTIBLE

By Daniel Gouker "Caddy Man Dan"

    Silver Cadillac XLR

"It all started early spring of 2011. I had a 2 seated roadster convertible in mind. So we went out looking at some, but then a light went off in the brain thinking how awesome it would be to have that hardtop coupe look… that in 30 seconds turns into an awesome 2 seated roadster convertible. So then burning sensation started a search for something like that. Long and behold I landed my Roxy baby about 100 miles away down in Maryland. After checking the Kelly Blue Book price and finding that this XLR was 7k less then the book price, I gave them a call and told the dealer I wanted to come down and look at it that Saturday. He ask where I was from I told him I was about 100 miles straight up the map from them in Pennsylvania. Come to find out there was a dealership attach with them here in Pennsylvania about a half hour away. I told them that when I arrive that Friday evening after, if she is everything I expect her to be she going home with me, and she did.

It only took me to May to find King Penn Industries and order an awesome WindRestrictor for her, then a few months later a cop pulls me over for installing blue LED bulbs in my license plate (BTW that’s a NO NO here in PA.) to match my cool blue WindRestrictor he then mentioned about the WindRestrictor being blue, but the policeman didn’t say it was illegal, but I just decided to purchase the 7 multi color anyway so I can RED as my third brake lite……….GLAD I DID! WE LOVE OUR KING PENN WINDRESTRICTOR AND ALSO DOOR SILLS!"

    CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHT :

    Char Marie Hurt-Robertson & "Beth"

    char 1

2005 Chrysler Crossfire Roadster - Base Model 6 speed Manual

"I was at the dealership with my Jeep the year the Crossfire first came out. While I was waiting for the Service Department, I decided to look around the showroom floor -  And that is when I saw her.. The Crossfire! I immediately fell in love. Of course at that point I had children and thought I couldn’t possibly have a car like that. A few years later I decided to ‘just look’ into a used Crossfire. I pulled some up online and there she was, my Beth! She was at a dealership in Granbury. I called and spoke with the sales guy and he had me sold, sight unseen. I called my credit union, got the paperwork in order and off I went, that very afternoon. When I got there, I was ready to sign the papers and take her home. The sales man asked “Wouldn’t you like to test driver her first?”. Of course I went ahead and took her out, but she was going home with me, one way or the other!"

I named her Beth and her theme song is Beth by Kissmusic notes

    Beth I hear you calling
But I can't come home right now
Me and the boys are playing
And we just can't find the sound

"Sometimes I hear her calling me to come ride and have fun. Not always possible as I do still have kids to haul and they argue over who has to ride in the trunk. So I sing this song to her. "

"My first Mod were here wheels, I found them on eBay and got such a good deal. They were delivered and then the fun starts. It took a bit to find a place that could put them on and they had to cut down the bolts, but they came out great!

"Then I started seeing Wind Restrictor® products on Facebook and fell in love. I wanted one of those lighted wind deflectors for Beth so much. Thankfully, my Santa knew this and got me started. He ordered my wind deflector and then installed it. He told me that the people he spoke with were very helpful and friendly and he was able to install without any issue. I get lots of compliments on my WR wind deflector, from meets I go to, on-line photos I share, even the police officer that pulled me over because my license plate light was out. He didn’t give me a ticket and said “Nice Car!”.  The lighted wind deflector from Wind Restrictor is a huge eye catcher."
    char 2

"I then added the blue jeweled gear knob, the antenna and blue pedals; however, my latest mod that I am so excited about is the lighted door sills from Wind Restrictor. Again, my Santa gifted them to me and then installed them. I have a great Santa who understands my obsession with this car.

Beth and I were fortunate enough to be able to go to Saint Louis in 2010 for the first Crossfires Across America meet. This was such a wonderful experience from meeting fellow enthusiast from so many different states and even Canada to being on parade around the baseball field at their Minor League game.

We also make it out to Texas Motor Speedway every year in support of the Speedway Children’s Charities. We get to go out on the track and have our picture taken in the Winners Circle. Beth loves to pose for this picture. Of course meeting her fellow Xfire friends is such a great treat every year. We end the night around the hotel pool telling stories and laughing the night away. The Crossfire family I have come to know is such a blessing."
